Meet Daniel Rusteau. Daniel is the writer behind one of ProjectBlaq’s newest web series, Redemptions End. Check out a few of his ideas on filmmaking.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
I spent all of my teens and twenties watching, loving, studying, debating and obsessing over film and at some stage during that rampage I decided I wanted to tell my own stories. The ’90s Rockstar filmmakers like Rodriguez, Kevin Smith and Tarantino and then the British Urban cinema boom in the ’00s with filmmakers like Noel Clarke, Mo Ali and Adam Deacon were the two main things that made me think “Just fucking go for it!”

If you had to choose, what would be your favorite film and why?

If I had to choose one it would be The Matrix. Every time I watch that movie, especially as I get older, I see it in a different light. I take different things from it and feel myself learning with every viewing. It changed my life when I first watched it and it continues to effect me every time I re-watch it.

In your opinion, what is the most challenging thing about filmmaking?

Finding money!!!

To you, what is the most rewarding thing about the film making process?

Overcoming the obstacle when a scene isn’t working on set. Talking with the actors and trying different objectives, pacing and blocking till we all feel like we’ve finally found it. Searching for that energy. That moment when we all feel ‘Yes! That was it!’
What do you see for your future in filmmaking?
How we view films has changed. We watch them on computers, laptops and mobile phones so I think filmmakers, producers and distributors will start to (some already are) focus mainly on digitally distributing their films directly to their audience rather than hoping for a small run at the cinema.

What advice would you give to a new filmmaker who wants to know where to start?

Write a cool short, make it, hate it and don’t show anyone.
Then write another, make it, kinda like it and show some people.
Then make another and another and another and just enjoy the process. Enjoy finding your process, your strengths, your weaknesses, your loves and your hates.
